Access to Weight Loss Medications on the NHS in London
Mounjaro™ (tirzepatide) for Weight Loss
Mounjaro™ (tirzepatide) is a new medication introduced in the UK in 2024. While it is currently prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes, it has recently received guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to be used for weight loss as well.
Who Can Access Mounjaro™ for Weight Loss?
You may be eligible for Mounjaro™ if you meet the following conditions:
- You are aged 18 or older.
- Your body mass index (BMI) is at least 35 kg/m² (in certain ethnic groups, a BMI of 32.5 kg/m² may apply).
- You have a weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnoea.
NICE estimates that around 3.4 million people in England may be eligible for Mounjaro™. However, due to limited resources, the NHS is prioritising people with the most urgent health needs first. This means that access to Mounjaro™ will be carefully managed, and not everyone who meets the eligibility criteria will receive it immediately.
When Can I Access Mounjaro™ on the NHS?
- Spring 2025: Mounjaro™ will be available through specialist weight management services.
Until then, Mounjaro™ will not be available on the NHS for weight loss.
Why Is It So Hard to Access Weight Loss Medications?
We understand that it can be frustrating for people living with Obesity to get the support they need. The NHS is working hard to make sure there is more support available and that access to medications like Mounjaro™ is fair and efficient.
If you think you may be eligible for these treatments, speak with your healthcare provider to learn more about the options available to you.
